In this blog, we will discuss the two influential UI\/UX thinkers<\/strong> who have made significant contributions to user understanding, problem-solving, and crafting meaningful experiences<\/strong>: Don Norman, the Father of UX, and Edward de Bono, the philosopher of creative and lateral thinking. As a UX designer,\u00a0their philosophies\u00a0are\u00a0not\u00a0only inspiring but also crucial in designing usable, thoughtful<\/span>, and\u00a0creative\u00a0products.<\/strong> Every buddy designer must follow them while building skills and a career in UI UX design<\/a><\/strong>.

Don Norman: Father of User Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Don Norman has earned his reputation as the \u201cFather of User Experience<\/strong>\u201d as he popularized the term \u201cuser experience<\/strong>\u201d, or more popularly \u201cUX<\/strong>\u201d. He defined it as follows:

“User experience’ encompasses all aspects of the end user’s interaction with the company, its services, and its products.\u201d- Don Norman<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He also gave us the concept of “user-centered design<\/strong>” (UCD). It is now known as “human-centered design<\/a><\/strong>” (HCD).
Don Norman is also a cognitive scientist, usability engineer<\/strong>, and one of the best-known voices in UX design<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

User-centered design and Human-centered design:<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

User-centered design is a concept that talks about users\u2019 needs, likes, and dislikes. It guides in following users\u2019 preferences and making designs according to them. The\u00a0processes\u00a0and\u00a0definition\u00a0of UCD have\u00a0changed\u00a0over\u00a0the years, and\u00a0once\u00a0DOET (The Design of Everyday Things<\/strong>) was\u00a0out, Don\u00a0started\u00a0referring\u00a0to\u00a0it\u00a0as “human-centered design.”\u00a0HCD\u00a0aims\u00a0to humanize users by\u00a0referring\u00a0to\u00a0them\u00a0as “people”\u00a0rather\u00a0than\u00a0the dehumanizing\u00a0word “users.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design of Everyday Things:<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

DOET is the best-selling book originally published in 1988 with the title of Psychology of Everyday Things<\/strong>. In this book, Don Norman introduced 7 principles to the world of UX Design<\/strong>. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Visibility<\/strong>: Make it easy for users to see critical elements so they understand what actions are available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Feedback<\/strong>: Give users instant feedback on actions to establish confirmation of outcomes and direct them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Constraints<\/strong>: Restrict the actions people can perform to avoid mistakes and inform them about correct use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Mapping<\/strong>: It helps give an idea to users of what action will happen if they interact with a given option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Consistency<\/strong>: Use common elements in the UI. This helps in making well-predictable and understandable interactions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Affordances<\/strong>: Design objects in such a way that give cues to users about possible actions. For instance, a door handle affords to be pushed or pulled, a button on a website invites you to click on it, and a scrollbar gives a clue to drag up and down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Signifiers<\/strong>: Give clues or signs that tell people how to engage with items and where they should act. In the door scenario, a sign that states either “push” or “pull” makes it clear what you can do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
